On this site you’ll find the calendar of calligraphy instruction by Christine Renden Haggarty and visiting Sensei, Kazuaki Tanahashi.  There is a selection of artwork and photos from Christine.  Also, a link to A World Without Armies, a project of demilitarization modeled after Costa Rica, that Tanahashi, Sensei founded and Christine helps to support.

                                    Riley Street Classes

Several times a year Christine gives classes at Riley Street, Santa Rosa, CA in Asian Calligraphy.

                                    Zen Brush Workshop

Once a year Kazuaki Tanahashi comes to Forestville, CA to give a two day workshop in Asian Calligraphy.  The workshop for 2010 will be October 30 & 31st.

An educator by profession, Christine Renden Haggarty, took her first calligraphy class in 1995 with Kazuaki Tanahashi.  In 2003, she had a photo exhibition at Amherst Gallery and in 2006 was a contributing artist at the Taimuk Exhibition in Beijing.

Christine’s work ranges from traditional scrolled calligraphy or Kakejiku, to painting on cloth and abstract compositions.  At times, being inspired by the character or photograph she will write a haiku or in the case of the photograph at Volcano, she wrote a longer poem, Pele’s Breath.

 This section has photographs taken by Christine over the past 20 years.  Along with the stunning photographs of the Golden Gate Bridge 50th birthday celebration , her photography shows her love of nature and attention to the smallest aspects.  Her travel to Buddhist sites in Japan in March 2009 is here to be viewed as photographs or a slide show.

  A World Without Armies

What a concept!!!  Since 1792 a Department of Peace has been proposed for the USA, but never established.  AWWA is a nonprofit peace organization founded by Kazuaki Tanahashi, based on Costa Rica’s demilitarization.  He travels the world doing benefit fund raisers to bring worldwide awareness to the possibility of a world without armies.
